If you want to win federal contracts, your business has to be registered in SAM.gov, the federal government’s System for Award Management. Here’s what the process involves, the terms you’ll run into, and the mistakes that slow Colorado businesses down.
DenverIS doesn’t sell SAM.gov registration as a separate service. We help members set it up and get it right as part of our Gov Contracting Pro membership, together with the coaching that comes after: finding opportunities, writing a capability statement and meeting prime contractors.
A 12-character alphanumeric ID that SAM.gov assigns to your business. It replaced the DUNS number in April 2022. You can get a UEI without completing a full registration, but you need a full, active registration to bid on and receive most federal prime contracts.
A five-character Commercial and Government Entity code that identifies your business to government buyers. For U.S. businesses it is assigned as part of the SAM.gov registration process, after your information is validated.
Six-digit North American Industry Classification System codes that describe what your business does. You choose a primary code and any others that apply. Agencies use NAICS codes to search for vendors and to set small business size standards, so picking the right ones matters.
With Gov Contracting Pro ($450/month, 12-month commitment) you get SAM.gov setup help, 1:1 government contracting coaching, capability statement development, opportunity alerts, prime contractor introductions, a featured listing in our member directory, and a free seat in our quarterly government contracting class. Not ready for a membership? Anyone can buy a single seat in the class; contact us for pricing.
Once you’re registered, your next document is a capability statement. Veterans should also see veteran business networking in Denver and our veterans networking group, and anyone curious about the referral side can read about our Denver business networking group. Compare plans on the membership page.
Guests can visit up to two meetings for free and ask Brian how Gov Contracting Pro handles SAM.gov setup.
No. SAM.gov registration is free from the federal government. Be careful with third-party companies that charge fees or send official-looking renewal notices.
The UEI is a 12-character ID assigned by SAM.gov that identifies your business across federal systems. The CAGE code is a five-character code assigned during registration that identifies your business to government buyers. Most federal contractors need both.
It varies. Once submitted, validation can take anywhere from several days to several weeks, and longer if your business name, address or tax ID doesn’t match IRS records.
Every year. Registrations expire after 365 days, so renew ahead of your expiration date to avoid a lapse.
